Two controls that I'd like to see in this game:

1. A control to tell your wingmen to escort your target, at which point they will consider the target to be their home base and will return there whenever they're done engaging an enemy, and will also attack any enemies that are attacking the target.

2. A control to follow your target. That basically causes you to act like a wingman would when following you. You orbit around your target until you resume manual control by moving your ship around. This would be really nice for escort missions, so you can just float along next to the ship you're escorting while in autopilot until danger arrives.

Sounds like it would be nice. Until they see a dead relative or other while escorting.

And when you change targets...?
My first mod, mostly done, still balance testing.

Changing targets doesn't affect anything until you specify a new command for a different target.

Interesting... I believe both of them would actually be achievable through scripting...

Yes, it shouldn't be too hard to do that with a little scripting, well at least the first. Godmod already has some functions capable of doing something like that.

The hard one would be the second one, which would actually put your ship on autopilot, making course adjustments to follow your target ship. Would be a challenge to implement... ;)

#1 has already been done (UGWingmen).

I just looked through it and picked out the relevant code, it might need some alterations, but I think its all there.

the code is here

I have a problem with scripting in that one script is often not compatible with another script. Sometimes its just nice to have things implemented into the game.

probably not. It may be functional, but severely outdated (it overwrites the commonwealth fortress, and all 3 wingmen, so it might work, but it will be the .99 stuff). I think the code snippet I grabbed should still work though.

Actually, the command I'd like to see is a target hotkey system - you assign a hotkey to the current target. Like Alt 1-5 assigns a hotkey and 1-5 recalls the hotkey target to the currently selected target.
Maybe it would make the most sense to have this as a ROM upgrade (and only works if you've already installed the targeting ROM of course).

What I'd really like to see is a previous target button, trying to cycle through a whole swarm of dwarg with any decent speed means passing up the master 3 or 4 times and having to start over...

there should also be a "target what's in front of me" key.

I just want a 'target biggest threat' button, going by ship score value. Maybe by weapon level. Something along those lines.

Same thought. Actually it would be sweet if the game automatically organized the local targets by their score value and showed you the largest scoring targets first, since they are more likely to need targeting anyhow.
