:D
I think it might be possible to tie in shield strength and energy usage to the number of emitters installed- each emitter might be just 2-3 tons (along with the main generator, which is about 10-40 tons?), so to achieve max protection, you'd have to have every emitter, but that would be ridiculously heavy.
(Each emitter would be 0 device slots)

The CSC is the borderline between ship and station. The closest example I can think of in terms of scale is Executor, which was shielded. I think it was only shielded around the bridge area and critical components. This fits in well with the whole multiple emitters idea. I think the in-game scale is throwing me off. Each of the white commonwealth stations must be a lot larger than they show because they state the population to be in the millions. Even the largest mobile fortresses and forward bases would be on the order of 10k to 100k max. Even Pt. Juno can't have to much more than 1 mil on board. With that in mind, the CSC is a large ship, but it's not quite a station, not in terms of the stations you usually see in the game. Just my thoughts.

I was about to post this point- In the intro screen when you start a new game, there's a picture of a metropolis station- see all those little brown dots surrounding it? those are either mikeno's or antares I's... Now a CSC would be utterly dwarfed by such a massive station, despite being somewhat larger than the freighters. A CSC would be much easier to shield than those stations- and many of the small stations (ie, slums) are often "too poor" or not important enough to need shielding in the first place.

You do realize this is not Star Wars, don't you? The limits of shielding are ultimately whatever George says they are. George Moromisato, not that other George.

I have to say, of the two Georges, I really prefer our George. (Sorry, that was off topic.)
This is our game. And George is our hero.

On this topic, perhaps as a small addition to the game there could be a directory/encyclopedia that the game fills out for you as you fight/encounter different ships and stations? Now I imagine that would be a great deal of work, but it was just a thought. Say that you encounter a typical Commonwealth station, the encyclopedia updates, and the entry for the station includes things like actual size, perhaps weapons/armor/shielding, and of course what it does. Or perhaps things like that would only update if you had, say, a targeting ROM (which have been notoriously evasive in my latest plays), which allows you to see name/combat stats anyway. Just pitching it out there.
Edit: The point of the entries is to help people see the real scale of the game since obviously the scale is off at some points (planets are the most amusing to me).
My first mod, mostly done, still balance testing.

I think there is some sort of expanded targeting system that has a system vaguelly like this- so it wouldn't be too difficult to expand off of that and combine it with something like the korolov stat screen- just a whole lot of work, since you'd have to imput a good deal of the entries yourself.

we have the Captain's Primer (even if it's a bit outdated) and the Wiki will have the list of all of them.

I can't find the page for ships on the wiki. I can't even figure out if my account has been granted editing permissions or not...

I think that may be due to the fact that it does not exists. Unfortunately...

If you have succesfully logged in you will see "Logged in as ***" in small letters at the bottom left, and the button that says "Show Page" will say "Edit this page".

If that is not the case, let us know here. I will personally bug Gambit on IRC to activate your account. On that note, why don't you join us on IRC one day. It happens that good discussions on modding topics take place there. Would be most enjoyable :)

I like that idea alot. Reminds me of Angband where you slowly get info on your enemies. When it comes to stations it could be implemented by using (staIsReconned), to find out if the data should be show. When it comes to ships, I'm not so sure. I can imagine it worked as a "Usable" item, that shows you information on your current target. Possibly you could scan a system when the palyer leaves it, and increment a counter for each wreck of a certain type. The higher the counter, the more knowledge you have about that enemy. (just brainstorming here). Of course, the real work would lie in providing the information. Lets agree that we should get it on the wiki first, then we can talk about making it as a mod... :)

Didn't digdug(?) make a size-comparison to-scale version of the csc when compared to a centurion? I'm pretty sure it was in the "commonwealth" section. Unfortunatly, doing a search for "CSC" isn't terribly efficient- you get a lot of results.
